Step-Up for Physics! Motivate All Students to Study Physics!
Help me give my students equipment needed for the STEP-UP for women and minorities curriculum in physics. We need hook weight sets, mini projectors and more.
Our high school is a large suburban high school in a diverse community. It is typical to have children of scientists sitting right next to children of families that live in the government subsidized housing units that are right behind our school and future first generation college students. Yet they all work together in our calculus and physics classes and all provide a unique background and mathe and science experience so all students can succeed. We have about 120 students taking physics this year of which 45% are young woman and 25% have a Hispanic or African American ethnicity.
My Project
I am incorporating the new STEP-UP for Physics curriculum into all levels of my physics classes. This curriculum directly targets women and ethnically diverse groups of students to study physics while at the same time challenging and interesting all students to study physics. Physics remains the most underrepresenting STEM field for women and minorities. The equipment will help make a difference in changing the curriculum to motivate ALL students! There is a project on careers in physics, women in physics, everyday practices, and all lab equipment and activities are gone through to make sure they are lessons where all students independent of gender or ethnicity can thrive.
