I am a 6th grade math teacher in a middle school, which is located in Lower Manhattan. Most of our students are from low-income families. Our school has divided into three academies this year. I am under the Academy of Community and Technology. Our curriculum should be allied with the theme of the academy. Students could choose electives under their academy. I am teaching an elective that is called Community Environment and Services to a bilingual class. Those students have come to U.S. for less than a year. Their parents are so busy working to make a living. Most of them work 6 to 7 days a week. Those students do not have a chance to see the city, not even their own community. The only places they go to are school and the local park. The objective of my course is to let the students to understand, to see, and to get involve with their community. We will do neighborhood walks, visit different organizations, and service the community. It will be nice if they have cameras to take pictures of what they see and those they help. Unfortunately, our students do not have cameras and our school cannot provide to us. In this technology world, it is essential for students to learn how to utilize the electronic equipment along with their curriculum. Digital cameras will allow students to record their joyful memories. It also allows me to show the digital pictures through the computer in the class. Those pictures may be educational and teaching materials during class. At the end of the course, students have to submit a portfolio of what have they learn and what have they serve in their community. Those pictures should be included in the portfolios. Digital cameras may be basic gadgets for most Americans. But for my students, digital cameras are luxury items. Please let my students to see their community with a camera. Their precious moments of childhood should be recorded with technology. This is the theme of our academy- Community and Technology. How can we do the community without technology? Our new immigrant students will appreciate for your generosity.
