Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in an impoverished area of South Los Angeles. All of my students come from low-income families. We are a Title I school where ninety-nine percent of our students receive free meals. My students always try their best at everything and anything, despite the challenges that they face in their daily lives.
They are already not expected to have it as easy as others, but we learn that with hard work and consistency, they can be "unique" or different from the rest.
My students are so eager to learn that it makes coming to work easy!
My Project
My fourth graders this year love to read by themselves, and I want to make sure that I have a variety of levels of books so they can read independently. Independent reading builds confidence and a love of reading.
The reading levels in my class range from Kindergarten to 5th grade.
Having more lower-level books in the library will help my students read more independently. Leveled readers are a great resource because students can easily tell which books are easier for them to read and which books to try next once the first level gets too easy.
