Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach gifted students from 1st grade through 5th grade My school recently became a STEM school, so we are focusing on enhancing our 21st-century skills of creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking! Students in our school come from all types of backgrounds, mainly Hispanic and African American.

My students have a love and passion for learning; they come to school every day charged up and ready to tackle new challenges.

I am amazed by the way they think outside the box to solve problems in innovative ways and by their energy!

The majority of the students at my school are English learners with Spanish being the primary language spoken at home. Over 85% of students also qualify for free lunch. We are a Title I school as well. None of these things hold us back, they just make us shine even brighter!

My Project

My students lack a lot of background knowledge in math and science. It is important for me to set the foundation of their scientific and mathematics knowledge. The STEM learning challenges will provide my students with not only hands-on activities (or distance learning activities), but also the opportunity to work collaboratively.

My students will be challenged to think critically, as they develop problem-solving skills which are very important for the 21st-century learner.

These STEM activities will challenge the most advanced students by allowing them to create such things to solve problems. Math challenges will make difficult concepts fun for students to tackle and conquer! They will be eager each day for a new challenge while mastering advanced mathematics and science concepts. This is part two of a fundraising goal for my classroom. In part one, I purchased books that include a diverse array of science and mathematics role models for children including women and BIPOC. The books I already have will be used in conjunction with these materials. I will read aloud a book to students then use the challenges from these resources to engage he students in STEM challenges to practice math and science skills we have been learning in class in an authentic task.

Of the 20 fastest growing careers, 15 of them require a background in math and science." -National Math and Science Initiative. For this reason, I want to expose my students to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) activities in our classroom.
