This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My school is truly unique as we are a small rural school only a few miles from the Mexican border. My school has recently opened a STEM/STEAM Center in order to give our 5th through 8th grade kids a space to create, learn, and explore their interest. Along with supporting academic areas; I hope to provide a caring space for students to be themselves.

One of our goals with STEM/STEAM education is to help students look at the world through a lens of compassion and caring for others seeking to solve problems in our community.

All students have the opportunity to visit the STEM Center during their lunch and after school, but our 7th and 8th grade students will be given a special task to create a small welcoming gift for our incoming 5th graders.

We all know how scary it is to start something new, or how difficult it can be to be the "new kid" well at our school we get a whole new batch of 5th graders and it can be a big change for them to go from their elementary school to the "big" school as some kids call it.

This is a great opportunity for our 7th-8th graders to put themselves in the 5th graders shoes again and help ease their fears. They will do this by designing a special gift for an incoming student and gift it to them when they visit our campus toward the end of the school year. We will work together to discuss what compassion is and how we can demonstrate being a good role model next year. The materials that I have requested is just a variety of different colored filament for our 3D Bambu printer. Thank you for helping us make a powerful impact in our school community!
