My classroom makes up one of 42 classrooms (K-5) in a school that serves over 750 students K-5. Of our population, all the students who attend our school receive free or reduced-price lunches. We also start our days serving breakfast in the classrooms.
It is one of the largest elementary schools in our district and has a high population of students living in poverty.
We are a low-performing school that is fighting to challenge our students in any way possible. We are fighting every day to close the achievement gap, but it's hard when students don't have their most basic of needs.
Many students look forward to coming to school, and we, as teachers, try to make the most out of what materials we have. We as a school strive to meet the needs of our students as well as make a fun and engaging environment for each and every child.
Integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities into our daily classroom lessons will drive student interest in these important areas of education. More and more companies are seeking employees who are educated in STEM related fields. Education in these fields should start when children are young so as to drive a child's interest so they will seek out these areas of education as they grow
The lab coats and the neoprene gloves are amazing tools that can be used as effective protection for math and science instruction that engage students in "play" so they can learn critical STEM skills and be safe while doing so.
By integrating daily STEM workshops in the classroom, using lab coats and proper safety gloves to support instruction and learning in math and engineering, student understanding of these important subjects will be broadened and enhanced tremendously!
