We need a FlashForge 3D printer, along with filament and tools in order to to add excitement, exploration and initiative to our computer science classroom.

About My Students
Ryan, Christian, Tad, Jerry, Tyler, Ethan, and Jonathan have become leaders in the computer science department at our high school through hard work and dedication. While they have the materials to code things in the abstract, a 3D printer will give them the ability to code and create physical items.
My students thought of using a 3D printer in our computer science class as a result of a Computer Science Leadership Summit that I attended. Once they saw the possibilities of a 3D printer, they were hooked.
The 3D printer makes coding less abstract and incites enthusiasm in all students who see it. Our students are trying to find a way to make computer science and STEM activities, fun, relevant and exhilarating.
My students are hoping continue their own studies as well as enable other students to realize coding, or creating physical models, can be not only an academic choice, but also a career path.
We want to change the student body of our school from one of STEM apathy to one of STEM excitement. We want our school to lead the way in technology and innovation in the Northeast Arkansas Delta Region, thus changing the economic outlook for our students' futures.
While many people think of computer programmers as solitary, we have already learned that is not the case. In order to solve the problem of how to code and effectively use the 3D printer, students will have to work collaboratively to figure out not only the steps to code the printer, but also to prove that the product is exactly what they had envisioned.
The students will work with the software program provided with the printer in order to create algorithms, as well as write the programs designed to create the models. Students will have the opportunity to participate in real-life problem solving skills, as well as learn to work in teams to solve these problems.
One other benefit we look forward to seeing is the increase in student involvement with STEM activities, and increased enrollment in our computer science courses.
In Their Own Words
Our class will lead the way in collaboration between different subject areas within our school. The goal is to bring computer programming to other areas of our school. Students at our school show interest in other subjects, but few choose programming.
This could not only encourage others to join our programming classes, but could also show the great potential for in-depth learning of software creation. It also shows the benefits of teamwork and developing problem-solving skills.
We will show other students the amazing things you can do through computer programming. We will share our ideas among other teachers at our school through our student voice initiative program. We hope to bring math, science, and computer science to life through 3D printing and modeling.
We are creating a path for future students that have the same interests as we do. 3D printers have the potential to change the course of our education, and we want to be a part of it.
We want to create a truly collaborative, technology-based learning experience between all of the different programs on our campus. Coding is not just putting words into a program and letting a computer do the rest. It will give us physical evidence of what we are creating on our computers.
This would help entice other students of our school to join our computer science courses. Once others see what our program is doing, this will encourage them to be a part of our programming classes.
