This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Math has always been difficult for me. Sitting in class drilling and memorizing math facts did not help me understand how and why math works. I want to give my students different opportunities to understand math and how it works so that they do not grow up with the mentality that math is difficult.

I am a teacher in a school that services students who come from low income working class families that live in or close to one of Los Angeles.

Many of my students live in low income housing complexes. My students are some of the most creative 1st graders you can ever meet. They are smart enthusiastic learners who enjoy learning and listening to stories read to them.

My Project

My students learn in a variety of ways, one way which is very successful for them to understand and master concepts is through hands-on learning. I am requesting hands-on games and activity sets that will help my students explore math concepts like, place value, measurement, skip counting and whole numbers. The games and activity sets that I am requesting will be used in small group centers. During this time my students will be able to work on concepts that will help them gain a deep understanding of how math concepts like whole numbers, place value and skip counting work. By doing this in a hands on and fun manner, they will be engaged and understand how math and numbers work. My students are very young, while they will not be learning calculus in my class, they can begin to grasp an understanding of math and build a solid foundation for their future math educational career.

Thank you for taking the time to read this STEM project.

If you decide to donate, you will be helping my students begin their mathematical educational career in a fun and hands-on manner. Thank you!
