My students need hands-on centers for math and science. These centers will cover magnetism, gravity, and electrical circuits in science and 2D and 3D shapes in math.
Albert Einstein said, "Play is the highest form of research." We are ready to do some serious science and math learning in our classroom!
I teach in a Title I school where almost 65% of the students are free or reduced price lunch.
The majority of my students eat both breakfast and lunch everyday from our school cafeteria.
My classroom consists of 19 bright-eyed first grade students, who vary in their abilities. In my classroom, I teach inclusion students, who have specific learning disabilities, gifted students, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students, and general education students. Even though my students differ in background knowledge, capabilities, and interests, they each have their own special talents and come to school ready and eager to learn.
My Project
The main focus of the resources is STEM related, but a few of the resources are cross-curricular. These resources will serve as enrichment activities for multiple science and math lessons. They will provide hands-on accessibility for students to engage in the content they're learning.
I will use the books requested to help students understand the science concepts through the stories. The books will cover concepts such as magnetism, gravity, electrical circuits, and energy.
The hands-on Snap Circuit and Gears kit will accompany these topics. The students will use the 2 magnet kits and bar magnets to explore and discover which types of metals are magnetic. The marble run will help students have a concrete understanding of gravity. Finally, the Osmo and K'nex shapes will help students tangibly understand 2D and 3D shapes.
STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) learning is a huge initiative.
The goal through the STEM initiative is to engage students and to spark their interests in these subjects at an early age. Many jobs are going to require knowledge in these four areas and if students can find STEM exciting in first grade, they are more likely to excel in them later in their academic careers.
