My Students

My students are both mathematicians and artists that range from seventh through twelfth grade in a variety of courses: Algebra 1A, 8th-grade art cycle, year-round 9-12th grade Art, and a remediation/enrichment period for mathematics that changes from seventh to ninth grade.

My students love to create and have a passion for learning.

Through mathematics and art, my students are learning there are several paths to take when approaching problems and that all problems can have more than one solution.

My Project

Inspired by the IF/THEN winning project, If We Build Up Girls, Then We All Become STEMinists, I want my students to create Batik art that incorporates the patterns found in real-life pictures of cells into an amazing art piece.

My hope is by integrating art with the beauty of STEM, the students will build up their confidence and curiosity in the STEM fields.

I will use the following videos from the IF/THEN collection to help motivate my students- Human Cell Images Turned into Fashion Pieces with Molecular Biologist Beata Mierzwa | Curiosity Camp and Introduction Long Profile: Ana Maria Porras. I want them to see the beauty in science and be inspired by these amazing scientists, who are also artists!
