My students need high interest non-fiction books and plastic representations of the four main sea turtle species to access STEM lessons on endangered sea turtles.
My students are kindergarten through fifth graders who all have disabilities: learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, and other health impairments involving attention. They are generally curious and excited children who love to come to school and learn through hands-on, creative ways, but they have disabilities that make learning challenging for them.
My students enjoy learning in ways that involve hands-on activities, real-world experiences, and high interest topics.
Their bodies and their brains need more movement and extended visual and kinesthetic opportunties than a typical general education student might need, and often their learning styles require multi-modal input.
In my learning program, students spend a portion of their day in the general education classroom and a portion of their day in my special education classroom where they get individually tailored support. Their needs are both academic and behavioral, and in spite of their challenges, they are all eager to learn and succeed.
My Project
For my students with exceptional needs, I have selected items that will bring STEM lessons featuring sea turtles to life. I have selected high-interest books that are visually stimulating and engaging. This will enable my students to gather background knowledge, see images of the turtles they will study, and reinforce the lessons with sources of information. Additionally, physical models of the turtles will help students to visualize physical characteristics of the four major species of sea turtles that can be observed, compared and contrasted.
Learning about sea turtles through STEM lessons helps us to hold relevant conversations with our adopted marine biologist friends at the Inwater Research Group in Florida.
With opportunities for us to Skype and have discussions with marine biologists, we can access these materials to better engage in scientific questioning. The reading materials and sea turtle models let us discover and observe in advance of having discussions with the marine biologists.
