Our school has a 52% free and reduced lunch rate and many receive backsnacks (a program through Harvesters) to take snacks home each weekend to eat. Having these opportunities at school to learn are invaluable for these students. Most of our students would never have this type of opportunity if it were not given to them at school.
They tend to thrive when put into a problem solving situation.
The hands-on approach gives them the tools needed to become those problem solvers.
My Project
Students will use these hands-on materials such as Bloxels, Kano Computer Kit, Q-BA-Maze, snap circuits, coding games, and paper circuit supplies during our seminar Genius Hour or during free time when they come to the library. These materials are intriguing to kids and interesting. Having these materials gets kids interested to learn more and possibly pursue a career in an area that they may not otherwise know much about. The library provides an open space to learn and the resources to get more information on what they are interested in. I hope to inspire students to learn about things that they may think are too hard or complicated for them in a way that is fun and hands-on.
