My students need to have Rekenreks to help them make sense of numbers and create a solid understanding of number sense. Rekenreks provide them opportunities to create numbers and look at a part whole relationships.
My students are bright and enthusiastic learners who come from diverse backgrounds.
First grade students need to be able to have hands on materials that meet with their learning style.
Over 1/3 of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. My students are second language learners, speaking a variety of several different languages, and need extra support to enable them to become proficient in English, and several special education students. Many of these students need to have access to technology resources that they do not have access to at home. These students are motivated and enthusiastic to come to school and learn. Some parents are not able to provide support, as they do not have the language, time, or academic resources to provide them assistance. My students are scholars and consider themselves to be beginning their life long journey of learning. Students are excited to share their innovating, creativity, collaborations, and critical thinking with each other. These scholars have created amazing solutions to problems they are given weekly. They are the future scientists, computer programmers, engineers, artists, and mathematicians.
We are an active classroom! We love to touch, observe and use that to build a deeper understanding of concepts!
My Project
Rekenrek tools enable students to build numbers and see the part; part, whole relationship of each number. They can see and physically move beads to build numbers.
Students are engaged building numbers and can visually see what parts were used to build the numbers creating a greater understanding of number sense.
Students need multiple opportunities to build numbers and concretely see what parts were used. Rekenreks allow all students to solve Common Core math problems and move towards an abstract understanding of math fact problems.
First-grade students need many experiences with number bonds to become proficient in the Common Core math facts. Students need to be to have many mathematical tools available to count and use as a resource to solve higher level word problems. Rekenreks provide students an excellent resource to be organized and see visually the numbers that make up a part, part, whole relationship.
