STEM to the Next Dimension with 3-D Design and Printing!

My students need a 3D Printer, Filament, and Ball Bearings to take our learning to a new level by seeing their designs come to life before our eyes!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. L. Walker's classroom raised $638

My Students

My scholars are a diverse group of 5th graders who live in a rural community in Hawaii. Many of them come from economically disadvantaged homes and have limited resources and experiences usually available to students their age living in the United States.

As their teacher, I hope to provide opportunities for learning where they will nurture their basic reading/math skills, encourage critical thinking, collaboration with others and empower them with the skills necessary to be successful 21st-century learners.

These scholars amaze me each day when they are focused on what they are learning when they are engaged in the lessons, and when they are excited about what they will learn about next.

My Project

For this project, students will learn the basics of 3D printing by completing two STEM activities that will introduce them to the engineering design process. In the first activity, students will be taking a rubber band propelled car (utilizing tooth picks, straws and bottle caps) and converting it into a 3D model. Student teams will then design, modify and print out necessary parts (wheels, axles, and frame) for their car using the 3D software Happy 3D. After assembling their 3D model, students will have the opportunity to test and measure the distance their car traveled. They will also need to alter their design when necessary, requiring them to think critically and creatively.

For our second activity, students will work independently to design, input their design into Happy 3D, print out and assemble their own passive attention spinner.

Students will need to consider the size, balance of ball bearings and dimensions to make it functional for its intended use. They will answer the questions:

How many revolutions will it make when spun? Is it safe for use? Will it fit all hand sizes?

These activities are just the beginning of what we will be able to create and design using STEM concepts. The possibilities are limitless when we have the supplies and equipment to extend our learning and creativity!
