Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm the teacher of the Intellectual Disabled Moderate (IDM) program at my middle school. This is my third year teaching, and I'm still working on building up my resources. I work at a low-income school where not only does the school have low resources, but most of the families I work with are at or below the poverty level. I don't want to let lack of resources stand in the way of my students’ education. I want to be able to provide them with the best learning experience possible.
I have a very diverse classroom with different ability levels.
I would love to provide all my students with opportunities that will help them progress.
Unfortunately, it is difficult to accomplish my goals when resources are low and the demand is high. I have sixth-eighth graders, and all my students are at different ability levels. I have nonverbal students who need different resources than my students who are struggling readers. I created a classroom environment that runs by centers. Some centers lack the resources for the students’ level. I want to create centers that will enrich all my students’ learning, a 21st century classroom, and more art integration.
My Project
STEM is needed in every classroom. Students develop great skills when they work in STEM activities because they are using critical thinking skills and trial and error. This is an important skill for my students to learn because these are skills needed as an adult. My students have intellectual disabilities and as their teacher I want to ensure that I teach them skills that are functional and hopefully prepare them as they become adults, and hopefully enter the work force.
I am asking for materials that will strengthen my lessons that are STEM based.
My students would benefit from the Circle Time Learning Center because this will allow me to develop where we go over the date and weather which in hopes one day I can turn into a weather cast students do daily. The STEM journal would be a great way for students to write down their experiments that they try in class. It is simple yet efficient enough for me to see students understanding. The Wacky Wheels STEM Challenge and Pendulonium STEM Challenge Wacky Wheels™ STEM Challenge will promote trial and error as students test out these kits in areas such as speed and force. The Osmo games will be used to strengthen students problem solving skills with immediate feedback that the Osmo provides. The fish tank counting box and he Learning Journey Match It! - Mathematics - STEM Addition and Subtraction Game will help students work on their math skills that are vital for them to learn. All these resources will be a huge impact in my students development.
