Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I work in a dual immersion (Spanish/English) school. This means some students come in speaking English, and some come in speaking Spanish. Instruction occurs in both languages so students graduate bilingual and bi-literate. My students are bilingual, which is amazing, but they are also kind, funny, and inquisitive.
This year I am trying to provide them with more STEM opportunities.
I have spoken with my teammates and we have decided to do a quarterly STEM challenge to get the students engaged with the STEM engineering process.
Our ideas are:
1. building a tower out of marshmallows and toothpicks engineering project
2. building a boat out of tin foil and seeing which boat can hold the most pennies and still stay afloat
3. the egg drop challenge - protecting an egg as we drop it from our third story roof!
4. wind tunnel challenge - build a structure that can hover in a wind tunnel
The majority of these items would help the students have full reign over their creations for project ideas 3 and 4.
