This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have taught 5th grade through 8th grade Math, Science and Social Studies for 15 years. This year has been the most rewarding — 5th grade Science and Social Studies on a bilingual team. I love all of my students. They have so much going on in their young lives and needed another person to let them know they are cared for.

My students are from low-income homes and I need to take the burden of school supplies from our families so they can provide other necessities for their families.

I will also be providing STEM supplies to help their higher order thinking to help them with their future.

My Project

I teach in a low-income community. Last year I started to offer STEM projects and they were a huge success. I am hoping to help my students with supplies for the classroom and I want to give them many opportunities to challenge themselves with STEM activities. We need supplies -- popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, and blocks -- and kits -- magnets, circuits, that will be used for morning work since they have about 30 minutes before school and for students who finish their work early. I hope to encourage more students to get involved with engineering and help them with science exploration and high-order thinking.

I want my students to be challenged to think outside of the box and use all of their brain power.

The other supplies -- pencils, erasers, markers and colored pencils -- will help alleviate the stress from the families and being able to get the needed supplies to go through school.
