Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are some of the hardest working students in our school district. I teach Resource Special Education classes and I also teach in our school’s free after school program. I teach two separate afterschool classes of 4th grade students. Over 65% of my students are English Language Learners– many of these students are still learning how to speak English. Our school has the highest Hispanic population in the state. Our school also qualifies as a Title One School: over 85% of our students live in poverty and receive free/reduced lunch. Despite all of these obstacles, these students are eager to come to school each day. They always try their best and never give up when they face hardships. The students at this school are really special, and their enthusiasm and willingness to learn make teaching them such a joy.
My Project
When I was a child I did many hands on projects that made me want to do more inquiry-based learning. My after-school students really want to do this also but because they attend a Title 1 school the funds are not available for the materials to do this.
When students are having fun with hands on projects they do not see learning as work they HAVE to do, rather something fun they GET to do.
We have made fidget spinners and made our own slime with materials that I provided myself. The students loved this type of learning! I would love to try other STEM related projects with them but do not have the funds to purchase the supplies myself. I would really love to open this world up to my students in a way that they have never experienced by having the funds to provide the materials.
