I work with special needs students in a self-contained setting called alternate assessment. This means they don't state test and are profoundly delayed in all academics and abilities. I also have students who are on the Autism spectrum, many are nonverbal and considered learning impaired. Education is totally different in the setting I am in. Many of my students make gains slowly. They try their hardest to learn daily living skills needed to exist. We try to teach what they will need to be able to get by when they are older. It is a very different way to teach compared to a mainstream classroom.
My students are learning sorting, matching, stocking, money skills, computer skills and other skills that you and I take for granted.
If you spend a day in the setting of my school it is a major mindset change. The day exists around speech and language providers, Occupational therapists, Physical Therapy, and other daily living skills. I know anything creative reaches my students and feel that bringing back computer science will help some of my students in the work world. Many needs basic computer skills and not just playing an iPad.
My Project
I would like to be part of the pathfinder's summer STEM institute teaching SCRATCH to teachers to then return and teach to my students. I would like to be part of the event as it would be 2 weeks of intensive training away from the inner city.
I would like to see if there is a way to break down the instruction to be able to bring it back to my Special needs students and have them be able to learn the program as it needs to be used.
Being able to take this training will allow my teaching skills to be fine-tuned, it will allow me to learn and adapt to my students. The previous training did not allow for differentiation, I continue to search for a program that will allow me to turn it into something my students can use and apply.
