About My Students

Since our formation in 2010, we have promoted STEM throughout our community. With over 1,000 hours invested in outreach programs and events, the Tiki Techs have inspired generations of future STEM leaders. Our cooperation and communication with the community has created a foundation for innovation.

Our team motto motto—kulia i ka nu’u (strive for the summit)motivates our Tiki Techs to develop personal opportunities, deepen their skills base, and empower our rural community.

Our team’s diverse composition (balanced gender ratio, more than 12 different ethnic heritages, a majority of team economically disadvantaged, and some students with special education needs) empowers us to find innovative, effective, and creative solutions to a wide variety of problems.

We ask for your support to help us strengthen our marine underwater technology education for our STEM students. Within this education is our remotely operated vehicles (ROV) competition; The ROV competition features STEM students using underwater robots to maneuver through obstacles designed by Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE). Marine underwater technology is engaging students in STEM and exposing them to science and technology careers; we want these opportunities to continue by enhancing its education within our STEM and Robotics Program.

By enhancing our STEM students' marine underwater technology education, not only will they each have their own academic growth and development, they will additionally enrich their abilities to develop and apply technology, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.

With our new equipment from DonorsChoose, we plan to direct it towards better design processes for the ROV build team through programs on the tablets and further promoting their progress with our new DSLR camera and printing photos to share throughout the community.

In Their Own Words

My goal for this project is to really show how impactful girls within marine technology education/ROV are. With this new equipment, I really want it to be able to capture the essence and foundation that girls are providing to marine technology education. I know a bunch of the girls on the team would greatly benefit from the tablets to be able to improve their design process and keep track of their supplies more efficiently. I am eager to see what this project is going to do for the girls in our program.

With the supplies that we are receiving from DonorsChoose, myself and my peers will be able to have numerous technological opportunities to advance in our mobile designing process. In the past, we have drawn our designs on paper or whiteboard and often lose track of theses designs; With our new tablets, we are planning to download a program that will let us invent our ROV robots without pen and paper. I know, personally, that I can take a lot more leadership in the media department. With this new Canon EOS Rebel Camera, I can consistently document the building timeline of the ROV team and publish their progress using our tablets. I'm so excited to take on this role for my team!

-Juliana H., 10th Grader

If this project is fully funded, my ROV team will have more access to technology that will help us have more abilities to learn about marine underwater technology online and have increased organization during our competition season. We will have a lot more opportunities to learn more about STEM within marine underwater technology by exposure through our Samsung Galaxy Tablets. We hope to further use these tablets to design our robots and possibly even do some fundamental programming on them. This upcoming season will be remarkably efficient with the equipment that we receive from DonorsChoose.
