My students need supplies that will develop their understand of the Engineering Design Process in STEM class. My kindergarten through 5th graders will use these supplies to participate in a variety of STEM challenges.
As a teacher shared between two Title I schools, my students face many challenges both inside and outside of the school setting. Many of my students are immigrants from other countries and are working hard at learning English in order to be successful in school. These students love participating in hands-on learning opportunities.
Our STEM program fosters collaboration and critical thinking in order to enhance students learning.
When students are faced with STEM challenges they are asked to think outside of the box! They develop communication skills while strategizing the best way to solve the problem.
My Project
Walking into a classroom and hearing "I love STEM!" is typical for me. My response, of course, is that I love teaching STEM! My students have STEM once a week as a specials class. Unfortunately there's not a lot of money set aside by the district to support the program. As their teacher, I want to provide an abundance of learning opportunities that enables students to utilize their critical thinking skills. During STEM, students are faced with STEM challenges (i.e; build the tallest card tower, build the strongest bridge using only one piece of paper). They must collaborate with their team to come up with a solution. The requested supplies will provide students the opportunity to solve new STEM challenges! Many of the STEM projects planned for the year utilize recycled materials, but I am in need of some resources. For example, students will learn to write in binary code using pony beads to represent letters, they will create solar powered ovens using tin foil and recycled materials, they will use a shoe box lid and straws to create a marble maze, and catapults will be created with balloons, crafts sticks and rubber bands. These are just a few of the projects I will be able to complete with the supplies requested.
