My Project

Implementing labs is challenging when resources are lacking. Lab equipment and kits are expensive, as a result, our students have not had many lab experiences in their classes. Labs are crucial because they are hands-on, allowing students to collaborate, and incorporate important skills such as problem-solving. Labs enable students to truly understand the content and several students have told me that the labs throughout the year helped them on their state or AP test and inspired them to go into a STEM career.

This year we want to provide our students with more labs because we want to foster an appreciation for science, build up their critical thinking skills, and inspire the next generation of scientists.

In order to offer more labs, we need support to purchase scales, timers, and thermometers. We need scales that measure as little as 0.1 and 0.01 grams for labs such as the cookie mining lab. Several labs such as soil porosity require students to use a timer. Unfortunately, when students use their phones as timers, they get distracted. Therefore, we would like to purchase enough timers for 2 per lab group. We also need thermometers that can read temperatures higher than 200 degrees Fahrenheit for the solar oven lab.

Students are interested in air quality after learning about it. After collecting samples from their homes some have bought plants such as spider plants that naturally clean the air. Students who want to know more about the air quality in their home will be able to borrow the air quality monitor. We want to provide our students with engaging learning experiences that appeal to their curiosity and help them understand how science is important in everyday life.
