Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My second-grade scholars come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. They range between the ages of 7 and 8 years old and receive their education in an urban environment with a population of 43.4% Black, Non-Hispanic, 26.5% Hispanic, 24.4% White, Non-Hispanic, and 4.6% Multiracial. My school participates in the Federal Free School Lunch program where 100% of our scholars receive a nutritional meal every day. They come to school despite what they are going through and work hard to accomplish a set goal.

We are also one of few STEM schools in the school district that provides all of our scholars with an equal opportunity for innovation, engineering and design principles, and stewardship within the context of cross-curricular, authentic problem-based learning units.

My Project

My students need a sphero, snap circuits, pizza co. and other STEM manipulatives to assist in brain development, collaboration, creativity. This wide variety of materials will service students in all areas of their education and with multiple learning styles. There are materials to help give a hands-on experience in all four core subject areas. It is proven through research that manipulatives are a way for students to connect their learning to a concept and deepen their understanding. No matter what grade level, having various hands-on materials helps the learning process tremendously.

Engaging students in meaningful learning experiences where they are able to physically manipulate materials allows them to make connections that enhances their learning, which is why it’s my endeavor to provide my students with as many hands-on learning experiences as possible.

There is a numerous amount of great learning tools that will help my students stretch their tiny, energetic minds in becoming great architects, explorers, and scientists in the next millennium. The Legos, magnetic blocks and snap circuits will help give them an incentive to finish their work. They will also reinforce some Math, Social Studies, Science, and English content that we will study throughout the school year. These materials will also be used in our “peace” corner at times where the brain and body need a 5-minute rest. The pizza co. games are hands-on strategies to aid my students that need a more interactive way of learning fractions as well as percentages. While sphero will be used for educational purposes, I have found it to also help my students behavior. It will be used as a choice for our “Fun Friday Free-play” days.
