STEM , STEM, Everywhere! In The Classroom, In The Home.
My students need to involve their parents with the STEM and math activities we do in the classroom, as well as complete extra science activities at home.We need Math Books, Science Experiment books, and Science kits.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students experience difficulties both academically and socially. Their problems relate to their home situations, financial stability, poor parental involvement and lack of motivation. This transfers negatively into their learning. As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district, I would like my students to experience learning in an enjoyable environment. I want to provide activities where they would be engaged and thrilled and get the chance to change their negative feelings of learning into positive ones.
My students need to believe in themselves, that they can be creative thinkers and assets to the community.
Therefore, these activities/projects will give them the chance to do so.
My Project
I was truly inspired by the "Super Scientist" project, because it reflected my students' interests and needs as they learn and explore the field of science. The majority of my students do not have the materials and resources when given a science or math hands-on activity to complete assignments at home. Hence, their grades are affected and the joy of completing the assignment is stunted. Also, their parents don't always get the chance to be a part of this learning.
The kits, books and other materials will give them the chance to complete their assignments and put back that spark in their learning and grades.
My students will use the items in the kits to complete science experiments and math hands-on activities. They will use the STEM experiment books, kits and math items to design, create and build activities and practice with their family and share with their classmates on their return to school. This will allow them to be engaged in math and science projects outside of school with their family.
This will also get their parents involved to make that home-school connection happen. It will also motivate my parents to encourage them to be a part of their child school life and the learning process. My students need a lot of motivation to perform and this will certainly do it.
