Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Over the course of the school year I've tried to find enriching activities for my students to work on. In most cases, I have turned to additional research, mini projects and escape rooms, but really would like to focus on more hands on activities they could explore on their own. We tend to find activities that are more work for the students or not as enjoyable for them.

With this project I would love to give my students something to look forward to and construct with their own hands and imaginations.

A substitute teacher left a small bin of Tinkertoys that were no longer being used in her home with a sign that said "up for grabs." I immediately grabbed the bin and brought it to class. My students swarmed with such enthusiasm that it sparked the idea for this project.

I have never seen my students so engaged and willing to just build using concepts we covered in class and recalling ideas they read about from ELA and Social Studies. Their excitement helped me create this project! I have requested more Tinkertoys, project ideas and K'NEX. I have also requested bins to properly store them for easier access. I know this project would mean a lot to my kids and hopefully create more of an interest in STEM Careers and tying concepts from their other subject areas into Science.
