Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an incredibly diverse population. They come from many different cultures and backgrounds. We have over 51 different languages other than English as a primary language spoken at home. Over 51 languages are spoken in our town. Our students work incredibly hard and are very attentive. Most of my students are preparing for college, some directly for a career, and a few for the military.
We are trying to create a community of tolerance, acceptance, and compassion within our school and our teams/clubs.
The school is so incredibly diverse (religion, ethnicity, socio-economic, single-parent homes, grandparent homes, etc.), with many immigrant families finding our town to be a wonderful, inviting home. In addition, we support the local homeless shelters, the homeless bus in a surrounding town, and our temporarily homeless students and families.
The high school has many varsity sports including football, baseball, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, hockey, track and field, gymnastics, swimming, cross country, tennis, softball, wrestling, golf, Special Olympics, dance, and bowling.
This project is specifically for our STEM Squad who goes to our elementary schools and hosts STEM nights where they bring lots of cool STEM activities to do with the younger students.
My Project
Our high school STEM Squad goes on a monthly basis to each elementary school and hosts afterschool or evening activities. During the evenings, we involve the parents in the activities in things like Escape Rooms or Full Field Chess or Life Size Jenga games.
"While travelling in Thailand, Jacob and India learn that monsoon rains can cause severe flooding that cuts people off from important supplies.
Kids will help Jacob and India engineer “aid drop packages” that can be dropped from an aircraft, protect what’s inside, and are easy to find once they reach the ground." [iei-2019]
This kit has 9 different activities which take 45 minutes each. It is a full inclusive unit that can be used to help students problem solve and create a safe box to drop supplies into the flooded area.
We will complete this kit as a high school group - with the activities increased to fulfill the Next Generation Science Standards for 9-12. Then, we will recreate the favorite activity during our STEM Squad night.
