My Students
As a school counselor, I proudly support 570 students K-8 in discovering themselves through social emotional wellness. A large part of this population are Spanish speaking English learners. I am here to support all students, and they come to me for support with everyday life and guidance.
Many of my students lack a strong support system at home, therefore they need all of the resources they can get when they are in school.
Students come to me from different backgrounds asking for help with their problem-solving and educational decisions. My students represent a wide variety of socioeconomic levels, learning styles, and cultural backgrounds. Our urban school services 570 students, 76% of whom come from low income families.
Last year as counselor, I held individual, classroom guidance, and small group sessions. Examples of issues students had included family problems, grades, death, bullying, friendship problems, anxiety, career interests, social issues, behavior, and anger.
My Project
As a counselor, I am always looking at ways to get students excited and invested in their education. I am building connections between students and learning with code. Students will use the Kindle to code the Sphero Robot learning how important STEM skills are for their future.
Coming from a low income school, students have never had the opportunity to work with robots and coding learning important STEM skills.
These resources will give them the opportunity to work together, build bonds, work on relationships and realize that there is learning everywhere. My special education students will benefit greatly from this hands-on activity. They will be able to incorporate these skills into high school an beyond. They will be able to use a different style of learning where they can flourish.
This project will make learning fun for the students. Coding is an important skill that opens the students' mind and gets them ready for their future.
