My Project

The world is changing and what students need to learn and, have access to, is changing even faster. Our school district is creating a Fab Lab by upgrading the currently existing lab space at our Intermediate School. The equipment that will be added to the lab will allow students to create and manufacture prototypes to enhance lab work in the study of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics for students in grades 4-8.

The students who will immediately be served from this project opportunity and experience are the 150+ students from my 7th and 8th grade Earth/ Life/ Computer Science classes and students participating in STEM programs including activities around robotics (FIRST Robotics, SEAPERCH, and MATEROV programs).

These students are part of a 4-8th grade Intermediate School which allows for unique partnerships between grade levels as well as unique partnerships with the real world.

From robotics and STEM to general classroom use, having a resource of a 3D printer farm in house will open opportunities to foster creativity and problem solving. Students in STEM to robotics will be able to fabricate their own parts, innovations as well as custom designed parts that can not currently be purchased. The designing and printing of a product will be an added STEM extension as well as promoting through the use of a printer farm and the "STEM/Maker" movement. Community involvement will continue to be key as I search out help from our local "STEM" community/partners to be mentors in our design and fabrication.

Add printers to our 3D printer farm will bring learning opportunities to my students, turning ideas and imagination, science and engineering concepts into tangible objects that will drive learning beyond the classroom and into the real world.
