My Project
Many of our student do not have a pet at home, so this will be a great opportunity for STEM learning, responsibility, and empathy in the classroom.
This STEM project has everything we need for a healthy, happy class pet to observe and study, while practicing responsible care routines, scientific journaling, engineering practice, and an enjoyable art component.
Wiskers the hamster is still in a pet store somewhere, and does not yet know that they have 20 amazing first graders who will welcome them to class once this project is funded. Wiskers will be one of the luckiest class pets as our students are so gentle, caring, and thoughtful. They can't wait to care for a class pet, and I have built all kinds of learning opportunities into this STEM project.
Our scholars will use the books in this project to research the care for a hamster. They will work in small groups to collect information, and then present their finding to the class. Students will use their engineering skills to help me build the 2 hamster habitats. They will study the dietary needs of a hamster and make a daily meal plan. This project includes all the food, treats, and exercise needs of the hamster. To support students designing, working toward, and accomplishing goals our class will work in teams and 1:1 to complete daily, weekly, and monthly tasks designed to provide great care for our new community member, Whiskers the hamster. Students will track their responsibilities. During this time, students will complete scientific journals that include writing details with both pictures and labels. I know this will be an enjoyable project for my class, and best of all, it was THEIR idea!
