My students are a very lively bunch who keeps me on my toes. They are middle school scholars with bright aspirations in spite of having little access to resources. This year, I have approximately a 4:1 ratio of boys to girls. The boys are extremely energetic with a desire to constantly be in motion. My scholars deserve an equitable education, and the same opportunities given to their wealthier counterparts. They dream of going to college, becoming doctors, opening businesses, and being professional athletes. It is my duty to make sure they know they can be anything they put their mind to.
For the Desmos workshop, I plan to enjoy this workshop on the free, online graphing calculator, Desmos. I will explore all of its features including animating objects and functions, creating lessons and assessments on teacher.desmos.com, working with the new Desmos geometry platform, and even exploring the link between art and math.
Many mathematical organizations including NCTM have challenged the mathematical community about the importance of mathematical modeling to a much greater extent than in the past.
The Mathematical Modeling in Three Acts session will highlight the key aspects of mathematical modeling by embedding tasks in the real world via multimedia so that students first need to formulate the problem themselves. Once the problem is solved, students move back into the real world where the results are analyzed in context. By using genuine modeling tasks, students will be more engaged in their learning and become more proficient at problem solving.
