My students need hands on STEM activities that will engage them in creative learning opportunities. Included are STEM activities, math manipulatives, and flexible seat options.
I have the privilege of serving 80 2nd grade students each day. My students walk into our classroom eager and excited to explore what new learning they will receive. We have a strong inquiry learning classroom that has high expectations for each student.
I teach in a high diversity school that services many English Language Learners.
My students love to work together to discover, understand, and share new learning. They are very creative and thrive on hands-on experiences that help them further their learning.
My Project
Motivation for learning is difficult for some students. One way I would like to motivate and encourage my students, to deepen their love for learning, is through hands-on experiences. STEM materials and activities provide opportunities for students to engage in learning about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) in hands-on ways.
My students are creative learners who learn through inquiry and discovery.
With these materials my students will have accessible STEM project bins to promote discovery learning. These STEM bins will be used as an alternative to morning work, for indoor recess, and for "brain breaks" throughout the day. Rather than completing a worksheet, students will be able to build and create with the STEM bins, but they will also be building social skills as they learn to collaborate and discuss ideas with the partners in their group.
The SainSmart Wooden Tetris, Magnetic Tiles Building Blocks Set, TinkerToy 30 Model Super Building Set, Bananagrams, Rory's Story Cubes, Snap Circuits Jr., and EMIDO Building Blocks, will each be placed in one of the STERILITE bins and rotated each week so that students will have easy access to each STEM project.
Two of our biggest skills that we work on in second grade is solving problems on a number line and determining 2D and 3D shapes. The Junior Learning 50# Line Activities will provide a kinesthetic way for students to solve word problems involving number lines. The Sea and Build Geometry Shapes will allow students not only a way to visually determine shapes, but actually create the shapes! These two activities sets can also be used in STEM bin rotations in the future. Additionally, the Wobble Cushions, Exercise Mats, and Fidget bands will provide students with a flexible seating option to create a comfortable learning environment to complete their STEM projects in.
