My Students

I teach in a Title 1 school - that means that most of my students come from low-income families. Many of my parents face serious struggles and have to work at least two jobs just to make ends meet. As a result, many of my students are denied basic learning tools.

In this ever changing economy, we need to prepare our students for this new world.

Gone are the teaching of years past - what worked then cannot and will not work now. To ensure that my students are able to face the challenges of this century, I have to present new and innovative content to them. STEM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Currently, my school does not have the resources to support this type of learning. However, I refuse to let this hold my class back. With the support of this awesome community, we motivate and inspire students to excel in STEM subjects. Thus ensuring that the have the best possible chance to fight their way of out the poverty that predominates their lives.

My Project

STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is all about exploration and experimentation. I have many little scientists and innovators in my classroom, but while they may lack the resources, they are chuck of the zeal to learn. Kids love finding out how things work through fun, hands-on projects and I love knowing that I'm preparing students for their techy future. Building rockets, robots, and other cool contraptions will help my kids become creative thinkers and problem solvers and may help them and our world in the future. For example, in addition to science worksheets to help practice motion and forces, I can have the students use hands-on manipulative to observe the effect that motion and force have on various objects. .

We need to work together to change the status quo for our nation’s children.

STEM education is one of the best practices in teaching and learning because it makes the learning relevant.
