Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students get bogged down with the rigid, false impression that science is very narrow and you have to get the correct answer to learn. Authentic scientific inquiry reminds us that testing predictions can sometimes reveal unexpected conclusions and it is the journey that awakens the mind.
My students are from a one square mile, high poverty, and highly gang influenced area of New York.
They are a great bunch that are tying to succeed while maintaining the illusion that they are hard-nosed street kids that don't care about their future. They all have parents/guardians that care, but may not have the resources or time to intervene as others can. They are doing the best they can with what they have and know.
My Project
In an effort to support a change in science education philosophy, I am attempting to introduce as many inquiry opportunities as possible. The major hurdle is supplies. We were not poised for this revolution. To this end, I am requesting flip chart pads, markers, correction tape and an iPod Touch, so as to produce and catalog inquiry activities. It is required in New York State that all laboratory activities be added to a portfolio produced from the student's work.
The iPod is the perfect vehicle for it will allow me to take still shots as well as videos that are admissible. This device will prove more flexible than a traditional camera in that it has built-in editing and e-mail features. Also, there are other functions that may assist us in the future that I have yet to dream up.
I strongly believe that inquiry activities will engage students and make learning a bit more personal.
They will realize that life is science and that a refuted prediction may in fact offer the most rewards. As an example from my life; I vividly remember when I accidentally put salt on my pancakes. I predicted that I wouldn't like it. BUT.... OH MY GOD, IT WAS GREAT!
