My Project

Our students absolutely love STEM — especially when we read engaging picture books or age-appropriate texts that frame a hands-on STEM challenge. Connecting literacy with science, engineering, and math not only boosts reading comprehension and vocabulary, but also builds critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. Unfortunately, after several classes and years of use, our beloved “STEM + Story” activity kits are running low:

Consumables like craft supplies, reusable building materials, STEM manipulatives, markers, and clipboards are depleted.

We need fresh sets so all students can benefit equally — especially during group rotations where multiple teams are engaged simultaneously.

Without restocking these materials, we can’t run our integrated Literacy-STEM lessons at full capacity. This refill is crucial to maintain engaging, hands-on learning experiences for every student.

What Will We Do With the Materials?

With your support, we’ll refresh our “Read + Build” centers: each one pairs a carefully chosen book (e.g., “Rosie Revere, Engineer”, “Ada Twist, Scientist”, STEM-themed nonfiction) with:

Associated vocabulary and comprehension worksheets

Small group discussion prompts about how characters used STEM thinking

A hands-on design/build challenge related to that text

Reusable building materials (like popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, craft paper, markers, adhesive, and simple machines parts)

Students will:

Read & Reflect — engage in read-alouds or independent reading with vocabulary focus.

Discuss — share ideas on how the characters solved problems and relate to real-world STEM.

Design & Build — apply what they learned to construct solutions, testing and iterating.

Share — explain their designs and link back to reading — reinforcing literacy-STEM connections.

These multisensory, cross-curricular experiences support:

Literacy: vocabulary development, reading comprehension, academic language

STEM skills: problem-solving, design thinking, engineering habits of mind

21st-century skills: collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking
