Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have a wonderful group of 10-11-year-olds. They are a sweet, hard-working group full of potential. I have many bright kids who want to work and want to learn, and having the opportunity to be rewarded for their hard work will encourage them to continue with positive habits.
Eighty-three percent of our students are on free and reduced lunch--this is just one example of how our needs are far greater than the availability of resources.
Due to budget cuts and other unforeseen roadblocks, a large portion of Arizona's budget for public education has been suspended and/or removed. These cuts are hurting our students' chances at success. Here, success is not an option -- it's a requirement!
Fostering a love of learning is vitally important to me as a teacher, and this project will help with this goal. I expect every one of my students to be successful, however, that may look.
My Project
My class does a weekly STEM lab on Fridays. This time focuses on science and engineering practices, but also helps kids work on collaboration, communication, problem-solving, critical thinking, and persevering through difficulty. I am excited to incorporate STEM LEGO into this time! This resource will be used at school only and during STEM lab time. Legos develop lateral thinking, allow learners to think in 3D, boosts motor development, and encourages creativity.
Check out this description from the Lego website: “SPIKE Essential engages students in hands-on investigation of STEAM concepts while contributing to literacy, math, and social-emotional development.
Standards-aligned learning units use everyday themes, relatable Minifigures with different personalities and familiar LEGO® building elements to solve problems through storytelling.”
