Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Approximately, 55% of my students come from low-income households on the free and reduced lunch program. They represent a diverse melting pot of cultural backgrounds such as Hispanic, Asian/Pacific Islander, Black, Indian and European ancestry across grades 3-6. 33% of our students score proficient or better on state testing in English Language Arts. Approximately, 21% of our students score proficient or better on state testing in Mathematics.

As the technology teacher at two elementary schools, I believe it is important to expose my students, especially girls and underrepresented groups, to real world hands-on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities such as computer programming and robotics.

My goal is to engage and motivate the students I serve into learning more about computer sciences. It's also important that my students learn the extent computer programming is prevalent within their daily lives.

My Project

I would like to incorporate computer programming and robotics as a unit of study for my students. With the donation of two EV3 Lego Mindstorms robotics kits, my students would be able to benefit from engaging hands-on activities that would help them utilize and transfer simple mathematical reasoning, science, and engineering skills to real-world applications. In this class, students will use the Lego Mindstorm robotics kits as a means to learn how to design, build and program their own robots to move, turn, lift, light up, and more. In addition to the communication and academic skills they gain, I also want my students to understand the importance of creativity and imagination within this unique and exciting field of study.

The donations to this project will help my students increase their knowledge and understanding of computer programming and robotics, while simultaneously increasing communication and academic skills (science, math and reading).
