My students are a mix of general and special needs students in my 1st grade class of 23 this year. A majority of students at our school come from low-socioeconomic backgrounds with around 90% of students qualifying for free and reduced lunch. As a community, we’ve had to deal with the outcomes of the Kilauea lava flow (bad air quality, earthquakes, and displaced families), and now, hurricane season.
My students are inquisitive, hands-on, and eager to learn in a fun and engaging way.
My Project
Some students might not have heard of stories like the Three Little Bears, or Rapunzel, so integrating literacy with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) will be beneficial for all students.
I would love to incorporate the materials into a center where students can work collaboratively with each other while hypothesizing, and experimenting as they learn together.
Knowing how to share, be polite, and handle disagreements are huge aspects in first grade. Working collaboratively will help students with the Social-Emotional learning aspect as well as the academics.
Your donation will help my students use their imaginative, problem-solving skills, and inquisitive minds, to apply real-world scenarios through exploring hands-on STEM activities that no worksheet or video could provide.
