My students need LittleBits circuits for our new Makerspace in the media center to infuse STEM.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Creative play with LittleBits Circuits will expose students to science, math, and technology using a growth mindset - seeing themselves as curious thinkers and inventors, willing to take risks, who aren't afraid of failure/mistakes. "You have a contribution to make, a gift others need." Angela Maiers
Serving all 500 K-5 students in the media center is a joy in our Title 1 school in a mid-size, urban area.
Many are on free or reduced lunch and aren't provided the after school opportunities of their peers in nearby schools to broaden their background knowledge and pique their curiosities. Students come from a variety of backgrounds but are helpful and encourage each other. This year the media center is emphasizing a focus on each student's identity, passion and establishing a makerspace.
With your assistance we will give students LittleBits Circuits they wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to explore with. It will enable us to create an exciting, hands-on STEM activity in the new makerspace in the media center. This project will expose my students to the wonders of science to ignite a passion and exploration of topics and support our science, math and technology curriculum in an engaging, playful way. We want to create a growth-mindset - it is okay to make mistakes or fail and my intelligence is not fixed at birth. Using the LittleBits Circuits will challenge students to wonder, ask, experiment, question, and grow as a learner! They will begin to discover more about themselves and their passions/goals for the future. The makerspace is a place for informal, collaborative learning in which to design and build.
Students will have hands-on STEM experience manipulating the LittleBits Circuits to explore in a creative, playful way in our newly created makerspace in the media center.
They will learn that it is acceptable to make mistakes when trying something for the first time or when you are learning something new - it is a natural part of the process. Students will be free to design, create and discover. After all, play is the work of children.
