This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is located in a highly urban area and many of our students do not have sufficient opportunities to engage in activities surrounded by nature on a regular basis. Fortunately, our school garden provides this space for them to explore, learn, and enjoy nature right here in the city. I would love to give these pre-kindergarten students the opportunity to spend more time in the school garden, learning, exploring, and innovating.

Your donation to this project will provide students with outdoor STEM investigations in nature, and surrounded by our Earth's natural resources.

Water play can benefit children, from promoting the acquisition of problem solving and early math skills to engage children in sensory motor activity. At the most basic level, creating a play-based venue for learning makes math and science more accessible for younger children.

With graduated cylinders, measuring cups, and funnels at this sand and water table children will engage in learning the concept of equivalency – that two different containers can hold the same quantity of sand or water. Children will have the opportunity to collect artifacts from the garden--rocks, leaves, flower petals, stems, sticks, wood chips, feathers, trash and more. Then they can bury the object in the sand and have classmates dig up the artifacts and sort them into categories based on their attributes. From there, children will engage in several math activities, charting the quantities of various objects on bar graphs, organizing them from smallest to largest, counting the objects in each group, and representing them numerically.

The water table in this project will give students a focus for learning that helps them enjoy time outdoors--exploring nature, and it will also provide an opportunity for the students' curiosity to guide their questions about nature , math and science.
