My students come from a small, rural community. Our district is a Title I School with sixty two percent of the population qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. We are also seeing a growing population of ELL (English Language Learner) students from the Congo. Second grade is such an exciting group of mixed interests, abilities, and goals. Some of my students are learning to read, write, and count, while others are learning to explore, use critical thinking skills, and conduct experiments.
My students learn best through collaborated, hands-on activities.
As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to find pride in themselves. My classroom is about building skills. The work we do in this classroom is building relationships, staying with the group, following directions, and accessing general education content in different ways. We celebrate little wins together each day. My students walk into class every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them. I want them to love coming to school and celebrating each other's successes.
My Project
Elementary student have a range of subjects they enjoy and STEM is usually at the top of their list. In our classroom, we are building a foundation of knowledge and a love of STEM that can be fostered and built upon for all students through years of education.
Teaching 2nd grade has shown me the gift that STEM can bring to a child.
My students have a gift for exploration and experimentation. When those natural impulses are matched with fundamental science concepts and instruction in inquiry methods, students gain a solid foundation in science that can help them move ahead and excel in all science fields. This year is the first year in my career that I can really build a STEM and Science education that my students deserve.
There is so much focus on reading, writing, and math that science and STEM usually get left behind. Some of the materials I feel that my students will benefit from are Magnetic Tiles and Keva Blocks. Our 2nd grade team has set aside a block of time for all students to rotate through classrooms for exploration through STEM. I want my classroom to be the building STEM room.
