My students need graduated cylinders, pipettes, stop watches, batteries and other materials to complete an engineering challenge where students create hand pollinators.
"Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve".
-Roger Lewin
In the STEM Lab my goal is to inspire children to think outside the box and develop problem solving skills. They collaborate with their peers, ask questions and find solutions to problems.
My students are curious and inquisitive.
They love learning and using hands-on materials. I strongly believe that true learning can only occur when students are challenged to develop their own conclusions.
I am incredibly fortunate to teach in a district that values elementary STEM education.
My Project
The students will use these materials to make quantitative observations and to design hand pollinators.
The pom poms and pipe cleaners I am requesting are going to be used to design hand pollinators. This is an engineering challenge that was created by the Museum of Science in Boston.
The batteries are to go in our digital scales to measure mass. The beakers, graduated cylinders and pipettes will be used throughout the year to make precise measurements.
The materials that I am requesting will help in developing the STEM Lab at the school.
Twenty-first century learners must develop critical thinking skills. Research has shown that STEM jobs are the jobs of the future. It is my hope that these materials requested will be used by many students in the years to come.
