I have been teaching for 16 years, and I still enjoy going to work every morning. Some days I don't see how I'm making a difference, but my students let me know I do. I'm always working in my classroom, and with my students, to improve my teaching style to better serve them.
My school is a Title I school with a 95% African American population.
My students are good readers, but struggle with comprehension especially with informational text. They also do not have a large academic vocabulary background and their critical-thinking skills are weak.
STEM activities in the classroom will allow students to think creatively and become problem solvers all while learning about science, technology, engineering and math. We need STEM learning labs to use in our classroom. These learning labs will allow students to become more involved take ownership in their learning.
I believe STEM activities will help my students experience learning through hands-on building of models of a variety of objects.
Even though we are learning about constructing objects, we still need to have some basic reading, math, and science comprehension lessons to reinforce our background knowledge of studying about informational text.
