This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hard working, eager to learn, and inspiring to anyone they cross paths with. Do they have the best circumstances? No, not really, however, I am constantly ensuring them that they can be whoever and whatever they aspire to be.
One word I would use to describe my students is, eclectic.
They are all so different, in so many ways. This makes for a positive and diverse classroom. With that being said, all students also have different styles of learning. Since most of them recently arrived to this country, it proves difficult to engage them, with a simple worksheet. As I have worked with them, I have realized that manipulatives are a great tool for this. The majority of my students learn, by hands on experiences.
My Project
By adding a STEM Corner into the classroom, students learning will be taken to the next level. They will be given Legos, pattern blocks, interlocking discs, play dough, and several types of building blocks, to review the concepts taught. These materials will be used to show what they have learned. STEM education enables critical thinking as well as science and math literacy.
In the exposure of STEM activities, students are engaged, they grow a passion for learning, and they are making deeper connections to content.
When working in small groups with these materials, students will develop skills such as collaboration and cooperating with others.
Another key factor of a STEM corner, is organization! All these amazing additions to my classroom are going to enhance student learning and create a fun, engaging environment. However, if they are not organized, they will not be effective. A large chunk of the funds in this campaign will go to the organizational tools needed to make these manipulatives effective in the classroom.
This corner will be such an exciting part of our classroom, especially since this is the first year I am departmentalized, teaching Math and Science!
