This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have excitable, wiggly, creative first graders! They come in each morning eager to learn, and experiment. We are learning in a Title I school in Southwest, Washington, D.C.. We are one of the forty lowest performing schools in the city. Over 90% of the students in our school are eligible for free or reduced price lunches.
Our school is transitioning into a STEM model, and our first grade classroom needs science and engineering materials to make it a scientist's paradise.
During center time, children should be able to develop a love of experimentation through hands-on experiences and experiments.
My Project
My students have never gotten to have Science class. It is simply something that has never been in the schedule of our day. Our school has decided to develop a STEM focus this school year, and FINALLY, we get to participate in science exploration.
Teaching science is a dream come true for me - I finally get to share my love of Science with my students, and I we need a few materials to start our year on the right foot.
Organizational materials such as science trays will allow students to independently work through experiments during center time, while non-fiction books and magazines will inspire students to study their world further!
