My school and my students are still undergoing maintenance since the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. My school is recognized as a Title I school, which means that most of the students I service come from low socioeconomic families. I teach 7th and 8th grade STEM English Language Arts.
The students in my class are eager to learn.
They love to participate, and any opportunity they get to share what they have learned with their peers makes them excited. This will be the third year since we have added the STEM Academy to our district. I have seen a lot of growth in my students with this program and I look forward to watching my students excel even more this year.
In my STEM ELA classroom, 21st Century Learning is a must. My students work in small groups and have many opportunities to practice collaborating, critical thinking, creativity, and communication. For example, in one project-based learning assignment, they created multimodal short films to explain bully prevention methods based on a novel they read and shared it with the community.
My students really love getting their hands dirty with learning.
However, I would like to have more opportunities to collaborate using some of the many Apple applications, and so we need an iPad with Apple pencil. In my STEM ELA class, my students learn through doing and they love every minute of being able to share their creative side through collaboration and communication.
