I teach a diverse group of twenty-five kindergartners in a high poverty neighborhood. I teach at one of the most diverse schools in the country. I absolutely love it! My students come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds, and they all love to learn and experience new things. As their teacher, it is my goal to motivate my students and teach the whole child.
Our school will begin the new school year with distance learning due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
It will be a challenging start to the school year, but I am very excited to meet my class. I have been busy working on planning virtual lessons, teaching virtually, utilizing websites and online programs, and building my own website for teaching. The families of the children I serve are trying to work with their children at home, but have limited resources available to them. I would like to help them with resources and provide them with what they need at home. It is my hope to relieve some of their stress during this difficult time.
My Project
With the coronavirus pandemic, we will have a new normal. We will start our school year in distance learning. My kindergarteners still need to learn in hands-on ways. At school, we do daily hands-on, engaging STEM centers and lessons. I would like to continue this important practice during distance learning. I am requesting cardstock so that I can make individualized STEM activities that are both durable and lasting for each of my students. I would like to provide my students, especially my girls, with a strong foundation in STEM education. There are not enough girls who go into STEM fields. I would like to use the IF/THEN collection of slides and videos in my lessons by showcasing women in STEM fields during my distance learning lessons.
STEM education will allow me to enrich the minds of my students in engaging ways.
Children learn best through play. They need to engage in experiences and experiment with materials. It will be a challenge to hold the attention of five year olds while teaching online. I believe that STEM education with hands-on games and activities will be the solution. Having a supply of colorful cardstock will allow me to create the engaging activities and games that my students need that will be perfect for home practice during my live lessons. These activities, games, task cards, and interactive math notebooks will be perfect for the kids to have at home. This won't be a normal school year, but we will make it the best we can and try our best to stay healthy. Thank you for your support!
