Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in Title I school that has a new designation as STEM Magnet for our district. My students are mostly English Language Learners with the most predominant language Spanish. However, we have about 12 different languages across campus at any given time. I have the privilege of teaching science and math all day long! On any given week, I see approximately 100-200 students in our STEM lab for Science and Engineering lessons. All lessons are hands-on and utilize Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) as the basis of advancing our students' English skills both academically and conversationally.
My Project
For almost a year and a half, these 5th graders have been learning via online platforms. Now that we are back on campus, they want to leave a piece of themselves for all to enjoy.
As part of our SEL, STEM, and campus beautification project, my students want to spell our school name using succulents.
We are one of fourteen garden sites in MDUSD that is dedicated to sustainable food systems and environmental justice. My students do not all have space for gardens at home. Through garden education we provide an opportunity for our under-served population to connect with nature, grow their own food and learn healthful food choices.
We will learn to care for the plants, clear out all debris, design and plan an outdoor oasis for all on campus to utilize. This will be the gift my students leave behind as they move onto middle school.
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
