This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"If it can't be expressed in figures, it is not science; it is opinion."
so said the playwright Robert Heinlein.
Science, engineering, and technology depend on measurement - unfortunately in my classroom my students only have access to balance beams that are broken and battered.
My students attend one of the oldest middle schools in a semi-rural town in Arizona.
Even though we have a major city close by, most of my students have never gone there. My students face numerous challenges on a daily basis; many come from lower income homes that are struggling to get by, let alone worry about education. My job is to inspire kids to become scientists, to dream big, and that with an education there is nothing they can't do. My greatest joy is to talk to a kid who didn't like science before tell me how much he loves it now, and that they are now starting to expand on experiments we've done in class at home.
My Project
My students do countless hands-on labs that require precision in measurement. Currently, we share about 3 working triple beam balances between 700 students. It makes it difficult for the students to complete their labs if they are always waiting for a scale. I want them to understand the experiment, not get bogged down by waiting for a scale.
Kids love doing science and engineering project and labs.
Kids who were never interested in science before this, are having excited conversations about science. It is amazing! Please help purchase electronic scales so the kids can use scientific equipment to help accurately measure their designs and inventions.
