This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I school near Washington, D.C. We have an incredibly diverse population of students at our school.

Within this school, I teach a class of preschool students (ages 3-5) who are blind or visually impaired.

I teach them the specific skills they need in order to become independent. This often includes teaching them to read Braille, teaching them how to use a white cane, teaching them how to care for themselves, and/or teaching them how to use any vision they may have efficiently. My students make me laugh and smile a thousand times a day, and I work really hard to make all of my lessons both fun and accessible. I feel honored to be able to work with such a unique group of students.

My Project

The purpose of this project is to provide my students with activities that will help them build their early math, science, and problem-solving skills. The games and activities included in this project are both challenging and fun! During the school year, we explore various themes related to STEM including tools and building, using our imagination, growing food, our body, and our senses.

Hands-on materials make many of these games and activities accessible to my students with mild to moderate visual impairments and with Braille labels or other minor adaptations, all of these activities and books would also be accessible to my students who are totally blind.

My students and I are excited at the possibility of receiving these new games, activities, books, and puzzles-as well as an organizer to help store those puzzles! Hands-on materials make learning both accessible and fun for my students.
