My Students
“I never teach my pupils. I only attempt to provide the conditions in which they can learn.”- Einstein. In my classroom I try to expose my students to different situations that will spark curiosity, encourage collaboration, and allow students to make discoveries.
As a 6th grade STEM teacher, one of my biggest challenges is to help overcome misconceptions about who or what a scientist is.
Many do not see themselves in a STEM career and the thought that science can be exciting may not have crossed their minds. One of my goals is to break this misconception and show students that there are many areas of science that might interest them and that all types (and genders) of people can become scientists. Using forensic science will help foster this appreciation of science and equip them with the tools needed to be successful in a 21st Century world.
My Project
My goal is to expose my students to a new field of science that they haven't been exposed to in the past. With this project I plan on taking something that students may have seen on TV or heard about and found interesting and then show them how it would not be possible without science. The materials provided by this project will help me set up a 10 day unit engaging students in many different standards in both science and math. Students will be challenged with activities that will require problem solving, teamwork, and creative thinking. These activities will not only require them to use knowledge they have gained in the classroom but also knowledge and skills attained in their everyday world and help prepare them as 21st century learners.
This project will give students a chance to expose my students to areas of science they may otherwise never be able to experience.
Whether it is helping some master standards, others gain confidence in problem solving, or inspiring others to pursue a new career, this project will have a positive impact on everyone in the room.
